The Age of Consent is Bronski Beat's debut album. Bronski Beat, at this time, was Steve Bronski, Larry Steinbachek and Jimmy Somerville. This was the only album to include Somerville, who left the band shortly after this album was released. Three popular Bronski Beat singles come from this album: "Smalltown Boy," which addresses homophobia, loneliness, and family violence, "Why?," which focuses on homophobia, and "It Ain't Necessarily So," based on George and Ira Gershwin's song of the same name from the opera Porgy and Bess. The title of this album comes from debates around the age of consent for participating in gay sex in the UK and Europe more broadly. The album jacket displays "The Age of Consent" prominently; the back cover and CD itself are marked with an upside-down pink triangle.
